It means your car is too fancy.

Where does that put Tesla since everything in the car is on a screen of some sort?

This does not surprise me one bit. I still think cars are getting way too ‘techy’...

Idk what this says about me, but the quarantine has barely changed my life in anyway at all, other than a little scurrying at work. My home life is about 95% the same

In fairness to Tesla, they provide driver assistance that in the vast majority of cases should be robust enough to allow you to be distracted for 15-20 seconds.

And this surprises anyone how?

I’d be interested to know how other infotainment options compare. I don’t see any reason to expect they’d be any better. And I don’t think the answer is to do away with these systems, but rather to focus on making them more ergonomically optimal. Crucially, And ro id Auto and Carplay are likely to get updated more frequently and for longer than built-in interfaces, which means improvements can actually happen instead of being stuck with a bad system for a decade or two.
That said on some recent drives, I’ve noticed that the new song popup on Android A uto has been distracting for me, seemingly more so than in the past. Might just be that I am driving more at night, and while Maps switches to a dark theme, the notification thing stays a bright white.

Honestly, it’s more the 7 weeks of unemployment that has changed my life more. I have uninsured all my cars and just kinda sit here.

It’s amazing to me how bad “technology” companies are at technology.
I was driving a rental car through the Smokies, and using the built-in navigation to get to my hotel one night. The first problem was that the infotainment settings had a dimmer that did nothing at all; I threw a spare shirt over the screen just to keep from losing my night vision.
I discovered the following evening that the interior light dimmer was tied to the infotainment display, but in order to get the display down to an acceptable level of dimness I had to turn the dash display (also tied to the dimmer) down too low to be able to read my speedometer or any other gauges .
So I had to choose between navigation and situational awareness.
I’ve also on a few occasions been nearly temporarily blinded by digital billboards; driving down the road, trying to read a display with a dark background, when it flips over to a different ad with a white background (Chic-Fil-A is a prime offender).

I haven’t been outside my house since Tuesday. Mostly because I’m sick, don’t think it’s the big scary virus tho. Doesn’t help it’s still hella cold here I wanted to get put an work on the Tomos but it’s 30 degrees in my garage right now.

It’s shocking how many people drive with their dash lights at the brightest setting. I discovered this was true with my brother and parents last week. I was deeply disturbed

I’m curious where these fall if you include phones and stand alone gps units. In addition to inferior OEM menus.
I find carplay to be much more intuitive and than the regular meny items .

...or drive without any headlights at all because they don’t understand DRLs and their dashes are inexplicably lit up anyway.

Plenty can cause distracted driving. I almost went off the road last night because I couldn't find the defrost in my dad's truck. But giant tablets on your dash is asking for trouble.

right - I know I’m a cranky old man sometimes but, dammit , I told you so. Buttons, people, buttons and loose the “entertainment”. #getoffmylawn, #yellsatclouds

Maybe the thought process is that more functions on the screen = more distraction? A stand alone GPS unit does nothing but show you directions.
I guess the most important reason Android Auto and Carplay are singled out because they are shared among manufacturers, so you get a bigger sample size and rule out brand-based biases.
